Machines, a medieval village and olive-covered hills
Vinci makes Leonardo feel connected to a real place. Explore his ideas in the castle museum, look across the landscape from the tower and finish at the country house in Anchiano associated with his birth.
The main choice is how to reach the birthplace: drive for an easy cultural day, or follow the Strada Verde through the olive groves for the more memorable version.

Leonardo the engineer
The museum turns drawings into working ideas
The Museo Leonardiano is strongest when it shows how Leonardo thought. Models of cranes, flying machines, textile equipment, clocks and military devices sit beside explanations of the drawings that inspired them.
Start at Palazzina Uzielli rather than heading straight to the castle. The route is designed to continue between the buildings, and the ticket office can tell you which sections and activities are available that day.
Allow about two hours. Families with children aged 6 to 11 can ask about the museumGame booklet at the ticket office.

A small village with a wide view
Climb the tower, then look beyond the museum
The panoramic terrace of the Castello dei Conti Guidi looks across tiled roofs, vineyards and olive-covered hills. It makes the relationship between Leonardo’s observations and this landscape immediately visible.
Outside, find Mario Ceroli’s Vitruvian Man on the terrace and walk to the Church of Santa Croce, where the baptismal font is associated with Leonardo’s baptism. The historic centre is compact; it needs curiosity more than a route.
Do the tower while you can. Access is weather-dependent, so take the opportunity before stopping for lunch.
The choice that changes the day
Walk to Anchiano for the landscape, drive for more time inside
Leonardo’s birthplace is a simple stone house about 3 kilometres from Vinci by road. The small exhibition uses reproductions and multimedia to connect his life and work with the countryside where he grew up.
The Strada Verde is the better choice in mild, dry weather: an easy but uneven path of roughly 2 kilometres each way through terraces, vines and olive trees. Driving takes only a few minutes and is sensible in heat, rain or when time is limited.
Decide before lunch. A return walk adds roughly 1½ hours plus the visit; the car version keeps the whole day compact.
The house at Anchiano is intentionally modest; the surrounding landscape is a large part of its appeal.
Three details not to miss
Leonardo appears throughout the village
Piazza dei Guidi
Mimmo Paladino’s geometric paving turns the approach to Palazzina Uzielli into a contemporary artwork.
Leonardo and Painting
The Via Roma section presents full-scale, high-definition reproductions of Leonardo’s paintings.
Mulino della Doccia
A short detour from the Strada Verde leads towards the mill and waterworks Leonardo sketched in the Codex Atlanticus.
The landscape completes the museum
The olive groves are not just scenery
Walking out of the village reveals the terraced ground, water and plants that helped shape Leonardo’s habit of close observation.
Old olive trees shade the approach near Leonardo’s birthplace.Vinci and the Montalbano countryside from the castle tower.
